Serious about cereal

No matter how small your breakfast, it’s still the most important meal of the day. Convenient Western-style cereal has gained popularity in Thailand, and it’s more nutritious, with fewer calories, than rice with a side dish. Mahidol University Assistant Professor Rewadee Chongsuwat, who works in the Public Health Faculty’s Department of Nutrition, notes that cereals have got even better with different flavours and nutritional values. There are now cereals with low sugar, fat and sodium content, and with more fibre. They might also include whole grains, believed to be beneficial, especially for young children. Whole grains are a good source of fibre, vitamins, calcium, iron and antioxidants. Per serving, sodium shouldn’t exceed 600mg and sugar 12.5 grams. Cereal with milk should be considered an alternative, since it generally offers 120 to 126mg of sodium and 9.7 to 9.9g of sugar per serving.
